Re: Old school players
It seamed almost every team had one completely flair player in the 70s - It is a rare thing now.
Most had a team hard case as well (in the case of Leeds quite a few). Kenny Burns was pretty typical.

Tony Currie - Sheff U and a player that rarely gets mentioned, he singlehandedly destroyed as in the League Cup against Stoke, I give you, George Eastham

Re: Old school players
Some classic players names being put up here. I used to enjoy watching Mick Channon of Southampton at his peak, and I know it was Revie's "Dirty" Leeds, but they had in that team several players who could work the ball, too.

Armstrong. Arsenal.

Re: Old school players
Paul Madely. Leeds
Keith Weller. Leicester.
Jimmy Greenhoff. Stoke.
Pop Robson. Us.
George Armstrong.
Ron Yeats. Liverpool.

All unsung ( maybe not Weller?) players but were integral to the teams they played for.

That Brazil 82 team could defend alright if they wanted too but they chose not to do so at all costs because they regarded it as anti-Brazilian.

The main problem was they had a bang average goalie who couldn't catch a cold never mind relying on him for a vital save.

Re: Old school players
Zico - Probably seeing it in rose tinted's but I reckon if Sir Trev and Keegan hadn't been injured for the 82 World Cup we might have got close. I know they came on for the final stages against Spain but if they had been match fit and played all the tournament who knows!

Another favourite of mine was Michael Laudrup.

Re: Old school players
In the 70's/80's had a lot of time for both Keegan and Dalglish. Loved the way Keegan and Sir Trev linked up for England. Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles also stood out. Can just about remember Alan Hudson who was a hell of a player. Too young really to remember George Best in his pomp but seeing the clips what a player. Gazza in the 90's, could and should have been so much better. All-time favourite - Zico of course. Just sublime along with Eder, Junior, Socrates and Falcao. Was mesmerised by that 82 team, just a damn shame they couldn't defend!

Re: Old school players
Alan Hudson

Paul Davies and George Graham

Alan Gilzean and Jimmy Greaves

All made the game look easy.

None of them could hold a candle to Trevor Brooking or Devonshire though. Who were fucking geniuses

Re: Old school players
A rarely mentioned Brazilian who could really play - Rai
Then Freddy Rincon
And a third South American; Francescoli

All would be worth a kings ransom today

Anyone remember Everton's Holy Trinity of Kendall, Ball and Harvey?

New Jersey 2:16 Tue Nov 8
Re: Old school players
Johan Neeskens
Tony (Ronnie) Currie
Phil Neal
Frank Worthington
Kevin Beattie
Francis Lee (especially for beating up Norman Hunter)
Dave Mackay (especially for scaring the fuck out of Billy Bremner)

Zola when he was at Napoli

Always thought Steve Heighway was underated, pin point crosses at speed.

Colin Bell

Cruyff

The Yugoslavian national team, before their war, played really good football, ahead of all the gushing compliments to Barcelona/Spain.

Brady - before he eventually joined West Ham.

Re: Old school players
I remember going to a game in the late 80's at home to Man Utd.
Their number 10 was running the show, looked dangerous every time he had the ball, a cracking little player.
Looked him up in the programme and it was none other than.... Peter Davenport.
Must have been his only decent game for them, hardly heard of him after that.

Alan Hudson was always a joy to watch, along with Ray Kennedy.

Re: Old school players
Thomas Brolin was another I really liked, and Belgium's Enzo Scifo.

Pablo Aimar another, apparently was Messi's idol growing up.

Re: Old school players
Rui COSTA was one of my idols growing up - loved that Fiorentina side.

Baggio was another idol.

and a few others mentioned below like Stojkovic, Futre, Boban, Stoichkov, Hagi.

Re: Old school players
Hard to select just a few but was always a big fan of Edgar Davids, a machine, maybe one CM even better than Keane...and loved Baggio, a beautiful footballer.

Maradona was the first non West Ham player I got excited about.

Agreed ref PL. I was watching the Arsenal v Man U 2005 encounterrecently. Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney, Scoles, Keane v Berkamp, Henri , Viera etc, A golden age in PL and the CL

The Chelsea team at the time though I hate to admit it was awesome as well.

Can't be arsed to hardly watch any stuff for either league now. Gone backwards for sure
